Additional Insured Explained
What Is an Additional Insured?
An additional insured is a person or organization added to your commercial general liability policy who receives certain coverage benefits from your policy. This is different from a certificate holder, who simply receives proof that you carry insurance.
Additional Insured vs. Certificate Holder
Certificate Holder: Simply receives a document showing you have insurance. They have no coverage rights under your policy. It's informational only.
Additional Insured: Actually receives coverage under your policy for claims arising out of your operations. This means if someone sues the venue because of something related to your work, your policy may defend and pay on behalf of the venue.
When Additional Insured Is Required
Additional insured status is commonly required by venues and event spaces for inflatable rentals, general contractors for subcontractor work, landlords and property managers for tenants, municipalities for permits and special events, and clients who hire you for service work.
How to Request an Additional Insured
Contact your insurance agent with the full legal name and address of the party to be added, the specific wording they require, and the dates coverage is needed. At First Commercial, we handle additional insured requests quickly and are familiar with the specific formats Florida venues and contractors require.
