Garage liability is a hybrid policy
Garage liability is not the same as commercial general liability, and it is not the same as commercial auto. It is a hybrid that combines the auto-incident exposure (someone driving a vehicle from your inventory) with the premises liability exposure (someone slipping on your lot). The form is designed specifically for businesses where vehicles are central to operations.
Customer test drives
Customer test drives are the most common garage liability claim. The customer drives a vehicle from your inventory off the lot, has an accident, and a third party is injured. Your garage liability responds. Carriers expect:
- Documented test-drive policy (who is allowed, license verification, route limits)
- Employee accompaniment on test drives where feasible
- Post-drive vehicle inspection log
- Photo or written record of license at the time of the drive
On-lot exposure
On-lot incidents โ slip-and-fall on the showroom floor, customer struck by a moving vehicle in the lot, third-party injured by your service operations โ are all covered under garage liability. Document the lot layout, post warnings during active service operations, and keep your premises in safe condition. The documentation pays back during a contested claim.
Garage liability vs other coverages
- vs Commercial auto โ commercial auto covers vehicles your business owns. Garage liability covers operations including customer-driven vehicles. Some dealers carry both; some carriers package them together.
- vs Dealers open lot โ DOL is first-party physical damage on your inventory. Garage liability is third-party liability. Different exposures.
- vs Garage keepers โ garage keepers covers damage to a customer's vehicle while it is in your custody. Garage liability covers third-party injury. Both are typically purchased together.
