Who needs meltdown and mechanical inflatable insurance
Meltdown and mechanical inflatables introduce moving parts that change the underwriting category. The unit has a powered arm, swinging bar, or rotating obstacle that participants must dodge or jump. The claim profile is dominated by impact (the moving part hits a participant) and fall (the participant misses the dodge and falls onto a padded surface). Operators must run these units with a trained attendant at the controls β most carriers require it. Schedule each mechanical unit on the policy explicitly so a claim is not denied for unscheduled mechanical equipment.
What makes meltdown and mechanical inflatable underwrite differently
- Powered arm or rotating obstacle β moving parts mean impact velocity matters and operator control of speed is critical
- Trained attendant requirement β most carriers expect a controls operator at every event
- Falls onto padded inflatable surfaces still produce shoulder, neck, and ankle claims
- Equipment maintenance is more involved than passive inflatables: motors, belts, control boxes
- Participant queueing and dispatch (one at a time) is part of the operating protocol β its absence can affect claims
What this coverage includes
- Bodily injury β third-party medical and legal costs from injuries during use, setup, or takedown.
- Property damage β damage your operations cause to a venue or third-party property.
- Products and completed operations β claims arising after you finish the event and leave.
- Inland marine (optional) β coverage for the meltdown and mechanical inflatable units themselves while in transit, at the warehouse, or set up.
- Commercial umbrella (optional) β extra layer above primary GL.
What it does NOT cover
- Employee injuries β workers compensation
- Delivery vehicles β commercial auto
- Damage to your warehouse β commercial property
- Mistakes in advice or planning β professional liability / E&O
- Intentional acts or assault
- Equipment you did not schedule on the policy
Annual coverage vs. one-day events
We write annual commercial general liability β not one-day event coverage. Annual coverage gives you continuous protection between events, simpler certificate workflows, and better long-term rates than buying one-day policies repeatedly. Most operators with more than four events per year save money on annual coverage.
Common venue requirements
- Certificate of insurance with $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate (typical)
- Venue named as additional insured on the COI
- Waiver of subrogation
- 30-day notice of cancellation
- Some county parks and school districts require named additional insured plus a primary and non-contributory endorsement
